Don't Treat Snoring by Simply Canceling Out the Noise
Posted on 3/17/2016 by Dr. Michael Allard
If your spouse is a snorer, you may not sleep very well at night. To try and get a better night's sleep, perhaps you have turned to ways to cancel or drown out the noise, such as wearing ear plugs.
A new device called the Silent Partner is also gaining popularity, as the device can detect snoring and emit a canceling sound to drown it out. While these strategies might help you to sleep a little easier at night, they won't do anything to help the underlying problem that is causing your spouse's snoring to begin with.
Snoring is More than Just Noise
When you think about snoring, the first thing that probably comes to your mind is that obnoxious sound that keeps you awake at night. Unfortunately, the noise is simply a symptom of a bigger problem.
The actual sound is produced by a narrowed airway that creates turbulent airflow. This restricted airflow can then cause reduced oxygen levels, affecting sleep efficiency and potentially causing serious problems.
Health Problems Associated with Snoring
Snoring has been linked to a variety of health problems. It can be the top warning sign for sleep apnea, which is associated with problems like diabetes and heart disease, and snoring has also been connected to a condition in which the arteries harden, known as atherosclerosis.
This is because snoring can cause the blood vessels to become injured, and as the problems heal, the injuries become scar tissue. This will encourage plaque to form in the arteries, and unfortunately, the end result could be a stroke.
Fortunately, there are dental options available to help to treat your snoring - or the snoring of your spouse - for good. If you have a problem with snoring, make sure that you contact our dental office about potential remedies.
