Helping Your Dental Implant to be Successful

Posted on 6/20/2016 by Dr. Michael Allard
A diagram of how a dental implant works. The ability to successfully replace teeth with dental implants that can last a lifetime is one of the dental industries greatest accomplishments.

Tooth loss was once an expected part of life and now, not only is tooth loss not nearly as prevalent as it used to be, but if you lose a tooth it can be replaced with an implant that can last the rest of your life. The catch? You have to take care of your dental implants to ensure that they are successful.

Recovery from Dental Implant Placement

Recovery from dental implant placement is a very important time in your oral health. Taking precautions to make sure your mouth is properly taken care of is critical to the success of the implant.

Keeping your mouth clean after an oral surgery is step one. Bacterial buildup is capable of infecting the implant site and causing a lot of issues. Keeping your mouth clean and free from excessive food particle buildup is the most important part of post-surgery care.

Not only is meticulous oral cleanliness important directly after surgery, it is of utmost importance for the rest of your life. Things like gum disease that can stem from poor oral hygiene can threaten the viability of your implant for the rest of your life.

Follow-up Appointments

When you have a dental implant placed we will make several follow-up appointments for you. It's critical that you keep these appointments so that we can monitor the acceptance of your implants by your body. When we place an implant, the bone in your jaw will grow around and into it and we want to make sure that it does so in a satisfactory way.
