How to Heal Following Having Stitches Removed

Posted on 4/20/2018 by Dr. Michael Allard
Oral Surgery Arrowhead Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery AZ 85308When your dentist recommends sutures to close an open wound for the particular oral surgery procedure, you have two options available. You can choose absorbable material or the non-absorbable material.

The main difference between the two is that the former will dissolve naturally so we do not have to remove it afterwards. Of course, there are some after care procedures to follow to speed up recovery or to prevent infection.

How Long Before the Wound Heals?

There is no simple answer to this question. It depends on the type of surgery involved and how large the wound is. For instance, extracting one tooth will significantly heal faster compared to the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth, where a gum flap may be necessary.

The main sign is, of course, if the clot has formed on the open wound, in which case you are on your way to healing. Whatever the procedure is, the first 24 hours are crucial and that means you stay in the bed unless instructed otherwise.

After Car Procedures

In the first 24 to 48 hours, care must be adopted to make sure that the wound itself remained untouched. If possible, a soft diet would be ideal, especially if there is still bleeding. If not, stick to fruits and vegetables as long as you favor the wound.

Ice packs should be applied against the face where the swelling may have formed. We do not recommend that you rinse using an astringent after the initial 24 hours. Instead, stick to warm salt water and gargle it for about four times a day. Use a mirror and inspect the wound. Make sure there are no morsels that are lodged in there.

Follow the instructions of our expert dentists, particularly on the schedule of stitches removal. Do not worry, it is not typically painful. At worst, you will feel a slight discomfort.
