Do Gums Suffer When You Regularly Clench Your Teeth?

Posted on 7/10/2018 by Dr. Michael Allard
Do Gums Suffer When You Regularly Clench Your Teeth?People that clench their teeth regularly are not doing it on purpose. If they knew they were doing it, they would find a way to stop. Jaw clenching is something that occurs with people who suffer from bruxism or teeth grinding. There are many problems associated with bruxism. It can affect the teeth, the gums and the overall oral health of the sufferer.

Connecting the Damage

Some people will wonder how if you are grinding your teeth, can that affect the gums. While the clenching of the teeth may not directly affect the gums, that does not mean there is no damage. Some of the most common problems associated with clenching the teeth are broken, chipped or fractured teeth. Damage to the teeth affects the way they work. The damage can also lead to other issues.

Cracked chipped or broken teeth are places where bacteria can grow. They are more difficult to clean. When they are left untreated, they can lead to cavities and infections. That can also lead to gum disease. It may not happen overnight, but it becomes more of a possibility, especially if the clenching of the teeth continues.

Clenching of the teeth causes pressure. The teeth can become loose and gaps can form in the gums. This can create another place for bacteria to grow. It can also cause pain and swelling in the gums.
