How Sleeping with Your Mouth Open and Snoring Damages Your Oral Health

Posted on 8/10/2018 by Dr. Michael Allard
How Sleeping with Your Mouth Open and Snoring Damages Your Oral HealthWhile many people make light of partners who snore at night, it's no laughing matter because sleeping with your mouth open can lead to some serious health condition and damage your oral health.

We can identify patients who may be sleeping with their mouth open with a quick dental examination.

Aside from the dangers to your overall health, sleeping with your mouth open can also cause the pH levels in your mouth to change, which can lead to cavities, tooth decay, bad breath, dry mouth, and other serious damage to your oral health.

How Can I Know if I Am Sleeping with My Mouth Open?

If you sleep alone, it's very difficult to figure out if you are sleeping with your mouth open, but certain oral health issues may give you a clue. Here are some symptoms to look for:

•  Chronic fatigue,
•  Dry mouth,
•  Sore throat not related to a cold,
•  Sudden waking at night,
•  Irritability and moodiness due to lack of sleep,
•  Loss of mental clarity,
•  Dental problems.

It is also important to determine if a child is sleeping with their mouth open and diagnose he or she properly. Snoring at night can cause a child to experience the same symptoms as an adult and can also affect their concentration and focus at school. In many cases, sleeping disorders are misdiagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

Our complete dental examinations are usually the first line of defense to determine if you are sleeping with your mouth open, so it's very important to keep your regular appointments, especially if you have oral or physical symptoms that we have listed here.

If you suspect you are sleeping with your mouth open give us a call as soon as possible so we can take care of your oral health now, before the problem becomes more serious.
