Osseointegration
Glendale, AZ

Working with your bone’s natural ability to heal, we can restore missing teeth. The surgical placement of dental implants is different from traditional tooth replacement methods. Instead of simply securing a false tooth, we rebuild the tooth from the jaw up. Our team at Arrowhead Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery can help you have replacement teeth that are firmly in place with the look and feel of your natural teeth.

70% of Adults Have Lost at Least One Tooth

Osseointegration is a medical term that was created through the observation of the bone’s natural healing ability.

Research has shown that our bone material will heal around a device and integrate it making it a permanent part of the bone structure. Studies on this began when scientists observed human remains hundreds of years old that man had attempted to make bone repairs using materials such as shell, rock, wood, and metal. It fascinated scientists that humans made these attempts and it fascinated them more than they could see evidence that the bone grew around the devices. The biggest problem with these early surgical attempts is that the objects used were not biocompatible, so surgeons began to consider what would happen if biocompatible materials were used. This study took time; surgeons began the work in the early 1900’s with advancements made in the surgical placement of dental implants in the 1960’s. They found that using the right combination of biocompatibility, the strength of the product, and using a lightweight material made for the correct material.

Surgeons rely on osseointegration to mend skeletal structures, including knees, hips, shoulders and the structure that supports your teeth. At Arrowhead Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we can rebuild your tooth’s root, providing you with a truly restored tooth. Today, implants are made of titanium or zirconium ceramic, long-term studies have found that they are the materials of choice for dental implants.

How does osseointegration work?

Osseointegration is the fusing of bone and an object. In dentistry, we surgically place a threaded metal rod, known as a dental implant, into the jaw bone. As the bone heals, it will create connections to the device bonding the two together. By using a threaded rod, we can create a significant surface area for the bone to attach. Once fully healed, this rod is firm and stable enough to attach a dental crown, recreating a lost tooth. This process can be done to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth using a bridge, as a post to anchor a partial denture, or even to stabilize a full denture. Depending on the number of teeth missing, you may require anywhere from one to six rods on each arch. Our team will meet with you and assess your individual needs. We will also review future needs and help you determine the right course of treatment.

Most patients will require some preparatory work before implant placement. This may include the bulking up of bone, removing infection from the mouth and gums, or making adjustments to medications to increase the patient’s ability to heal. We will review your dental and medical history during your consultation.
