What Happens When You Struggle with Jaw Resorption?
Posted on 7/20/2018 by Dr. Michael Allard
Our bones are thought of as the strongest part of the body. Breaking a bone is not easy, but that does not mean that the bones are not at risk. The jaw bone can suffer from a condition known as jaw resorption. It is not a condition that many are familiar with, but it happens more than people realize. Oral surgeons help people with this condition. This is what jaw resorption is all about. What is Jaw ResorptionOver the course of your lifetime the bones in your body go through a dynamic process. They go through a process of regeneration and resorption. This process keeps going on and the body maintains an equilibrium. When the process is interrupted trouble can begin. In the mouth, the jaw keeps its size and shape through the normal processes of bone. Part of the process is controlled by the teeth. When someone is missing teeth, they interrupt the normal process of the bones of the jaw. When the teeth are not present, the body thinks there is no need for the calcium that was in the teeth. That begins the process of jaw resorption. Impact of Jaw ResorptionIf jaw resorption goes untreated, several things can happen. The structure of the jaw will shrink because the bones no longer regenerate. That can change the bite of the person and the way their jaw works. It can lead to problems with chewing and pain while moving the jaw and mouth. Many people suffering from jaw resorption have a difficult time talking and doing many other things. It is possible to treat jaw resorption. Dental implants can replace missing teeth and keep the process of regeneration and resorption going. If you want more information about resorption and the use of dental implants to treat it, contact our offices today.... Read more...
