Oral Cancer Screening

What Happens During an Exam?

During an oral cancer exam, you doctor will:
•  Exam of the tongue and insides of your mouth to check for red or white patches or sores
•  Feel the tissues of the mouth to check for lumps or other abnormalities
•  Order further testing on abnormalities that are found
•  Discuss your treatment options
•  Answer any questions you may have
•  Schedule your appointment!

Oral pathology is related to diseases of the teeth, bone, and soft tissue. When you have changes to the tissue in your mouth, including the gums, tongue, or throat, you will want to schedule an examination to facilitate the early detection and diagnosis of disease. If you are concerned about oral cancer in Glendale, AZ, contact our office to schedule your appointment with Dr. Michael Allard. Dr. Allard is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with years of experience and training in the diagnosis and treatment of oral conditions. Your visit for oral cancer screening may include the following:
•  Review of your medical and dental history
•  Visual evaluation of your oral cavity
•  Tactile inspection of your soft tissue
•  Biopsy, or removal, of tissue for oral pathology

What to Expect From Screening for Oral Cancer

Early detection of precancerous or cancerous cells is critical to maintaining your oral and overall health. Oral pathology screenings should be performed once a year. Dr. Allard will visually inspect your mouth, tongue and gums for signs of cysts, colored patches or sores. He will then feel the soft tissue to check for any abnormalities. If any are present, further testing will be performed. Dr. Allard may take a biopsy of the tissue and send it to a pathology lab for testing. The analysis will determine whether treatment is necessary.

Oral Pathology Self Exams

Annual professional exams by Dr. Allard are recommended, but you should also consider performing self exams at home to detect growths or lesions in between visits. Frequently inspect your mouth to become aware of how the tissue looks and feels and report any changes to our office so that we may schedule an oral pathology appointment for you as soon as possible. Successful treatment depends, in part, on early treatment. With early detection, oral cancer is often treatable. For your oral cancer screening and consultation in Glendale, AZ, contact Dr. Allard today.
