Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a by-product of blood (plasma) that is rich in platelets. These platelets initiate the healing process by forming a blood clot and by carrying growth factors to the wound.
This can be done in the office prior to surgical procedures where it is indicated. Dr. Allard harvests a small amount of blood from the patient while they are having outpatient surgery. The blood is then placed in the PRP centrifuge machine and spun down. Within 15 minutes the PRP is formed and ready to use.
PRP is a by-product of the patient’s own blood, therefore, disease transmission is not an issue. A new and sterile blood draw kit is used for each patient. Anything leftover is discarded immediately.
