Reason for One-Sided Jaw Pain

Posted on 12/10/2019 by Dr. Michael Allard
Reason for One-Sided Jaw PainIf you have recently experienced jaw pain on one side of your face, it could be an indication of several problems. Jaw pain is typically caused by the muscle that helps you open and close your mouth.

This muscle is located right below the cheek and near the ear. This muscle can cause you pain when it's under stress and when it has experienced trauma.

Teeth Grinding

Typically, people who grind their teeth feel pain on both sides of their faces. This is because people who grind their teeth generally grind their teeth evenly. The act of grinding your teeth can put a lot of tension on your jaw muscle making it inflamed the more a person grinds their teeth. However, jaw pain on one side of your face isn't an indication of teeth grinding.

In most cases, pain on one side of the jaw indicates an abscessed tooth or a cavity. The location of the back molars is very close to where the muscle is that help you open and close your mouth so it can be easily confused for these problems. Abscessed teeth and cavities happen when the bacteria in your mouth, eat away at a tooth. A cavity is less severe than an abscessed tooth, but still needs to be looked at.

Oral Infections

Abscessed teeth form in the same way cavities do, but they are more severe. Abscessed teeth happen when the bacteria in the mouth have eaten though the tooth and infected the tissue underneath. If this happens, a root canal is performed to cure the infection. After the root canal is performed, a crown is then placed on top of the tooth to protect it from further infection.

You may have an abscessed tooth if you have pain on one side of your face. Please come to our office for a visit so that we can help you solve the pain. All you need to do is call us and set up an appointment. We will be happy help!
