Ways of Keeping Your Body from Rejecting an Oral Implant
Posted on 9/21/2020 by Dr. Michael Allard
Ways of Keeping Your Body from Rejecting an Oral ImplantImplants are trending today, as they offer people with missing teeth and other dental problems a way to revitalize their smiles. However, that does not mean you are totally in the clear for future health concerns. You still need to make sure your body will receive the implant so you don't run into problems with implant failure. While an implant failure is rare, it still can happen. That is why it pays to know the reasons associated with rejection and failure.

When an Allergy Is to Blame

The body may reject your oral implant for one of various reasons. Once you know these reasons, it is important to take the proper measures to keep your implant from failing. In some instances, the body may reject an implant because of an allergy to titanium or the alloys used in the restoration. To solve the problem, we might suggest that the patient switch out the restoration for an implant made of zirconia. Zirconia is highly regarded for its durability and its ability to resist plaque, which leads to lower incidences of infection.

Other Reasons Why the Body Will Not Accept an Implant

The most common reason the body rejects an implant is because of the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. If bacteria has settled in the jawbone during implant surgery, it may spread from one implant to the next, causing the body to totally reject all the implants. Neglecting to brush and floss at least twice a day can also cause your body to reject your implants. Another contributing cause to failure is peri-implantitis. The infection, which inflames the tissues around an implant, can develop if you do not clean around your implant.
