Healthy tissues are smooth and pink. Any changes in the texture or color of your soft tissues, even minor changes, need to be looked at right away. While these changes might be nothing, they could also point to a serious issue. At Arrowhead Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we can diagnose some pathological issues and provide you with the treatment you need to restore the health of your mouth.

Pathological Diseases

There are some different pathological diseases, both benign and malignant, that we can diagnose and provide treatment for. These issues include conditions such as:
•  Cold and canker sores.
•  Problems with the salivary glands, which can cause dry mouth.
•  Patches of excessive cell growth, called leukoplakia.
•  Oral thrush, or a yeast infection that causes white patches in your mouth.
•  Hairy tongue and geographic tongue.
•  Median palatal cysts, or cysts that form in your palate. While benign, they can cause significant pain.
•  Halitosis.
•  Oral cancer. Oral cancer is the most dangerous pathological disease. Without early diagnosis and treatment, it can be fatal.

Diagnosing Pathological Diseases

Changes in your intraoral tissues, even minor changes, should be examined right away. While there might not be anything wrong, changes in your intraoral tissues can indicate an issue. It might be a benign problem that can be easily treated, or it might be something serious.

Diagnosing pathological diseases requires an oral exam. During this exam, we look over your mouth and take X-ray or 3D images. In some cases, we may also perform a soft tissue biopsy. A soft tissue biopsy is a minor procedure that involves removing a small sample of the abnormality in your mouth for closer examination under a microscope. It is an effective tool for diagnosing or ruling out, the presence of oral cancer. Once we can diagnose your pathological disease, we can then formulate a treatment plan that will provide you with the best possible results.

How are Pathological Diseases Treated?

The treatment you receive depends significantly upon your specific diagnosis. There are several different types of treatments that you may be prescribed, including:
•  Oral and topical antibiotics. Oral or topical antibiotics are often prescribed to fight off infections.
•  A prescription mouthwash. A prescription mouthwash may be recommended to help treat infections caused by poor oral hygiene. Mouthwashes should be used in conjunction with improved oral care practices. Combined with regular brushing and flossing, prescription mouthwashes can help to improve your oral health.
•  Oral surgery. Oral surgical procedures may be recommended for one of many reasons. Surgery is often used to remove growths, both benign and malignant. Removing malignant tumors in the early stages is essential for stopping the spread of oral cancer. In some cases, early tumor removal can help to stop oral cancer in its tracks. However, if removing the tumors do not stop the disease, you will be recommended for further treatment.

Even the most minor changes in your intraoral tissues should be addressed as soon as possible. If you notice any changes in your intraoral tissues, call Arrowhead Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery today at (623) 738-2564 to schedule an appointment.
