 At Arrowhead Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we understand that having oral surgery is a major event in your life and so we realize that you're bound to have some questions. Since we've heard most of these questions before, we're prepared to give you the answers you need – even before you know you need them.
What happens during my procedure?
We will gladly tell you exactly what we plan to do during your surgery. There's no need for us to get into specifics, but we can tell you why we're making an incision in your mouth and what our ultimate goal is.
What options do I have for anesthesia? Which do you recommend?
We will review your medical history to determine what type of anesthesia is best for you. Often, more than one option is available. This is why it's a good idea for you to get as much information as possible about each of the options from us. Doing so will help you to make a well-informed decision about what's best for you.
How long does the procedure take?
It's important for you to know approximately how long your procedure will take. This will not only tell about how severe it is, but it will also allow you to make arrangements for your aftercare. You'll know when to arrange to have someone pick you up from our office and how long you should take off from work or school.
How long will it take me to recover?
There are several factors that go into determining how long your recovery will take. The type of surgery and your overall health are the biggest factors. We can give you a better idea when you talk to us.
When can I resume my normal activities?
You'll be limited on what you eat for a while. Since you'll probably have stitches, you should avoid anything hard. Typically, you won't be allowed to use straws or suck on anything like ice or hard candy either. It's also a good idea to slowly ease back into your regular physical routine. We'll tell you when we think you should resume exercising and other strenuous activities.
What medications should I take?
Sometimes we'll prescribe medicines that we need you to start taking a few days before your surgery. At other times we'll prescribe medicines that you need to take after your surgery. It's important to follow our instructions and take them only as prescribed. Make sure you pick up your medicine before your surgery so you don't have to worry about doing so when you should be focusing on recovering.
What, if any, risks and complications are involved?
Every surgery has its own set of risks and complications. We'll tell you about them and their likelihood, as well as what you can do to avoid them.
