Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is the application of numbing medication directly into the area that is about to be treated. You remain conscious during the procedure and it serves to relieve pain. You still though tend to feel the pressure of the instruments during the procedure (which for many makes the technique, when used as the sole agent , less than optimal).
Occasionally, nitrous oxide will be used with local anesthesia as an adjunct. This agent is commonly referred to as “laughing gas”. It is a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen that you breathe in via a mask placed over your nose.
With nitrous oxide, you remain conscious. Once the mask is removed, within a few minutes the gas no longer has effect.
IV Sedation
IV Sedation is a form of deeper anesthesia whereby an intravenous catheter is placed into a vein and medicine is titrated to achieve a period of brief, but effective sedation. Patients may report remembering conversations or sensations during the procedure, but tend to have little memory of the actual surgery. It is best used for shorter procedures.
General Anesthesia
With most surgery more optimally, this is the type of anesthesia used. This type of anesthesia uses safe and powerful sedatives to produce a more profound anesthesia experience with no memory of the actual procedure. This method is typically used for wisdom teeth, dental extractions/bone grafting procedures, dental implant placement and other larger procedures but may be utilized for any type of procedure.
You are monitored closely throughout the procedure by the surgical team and with this technique,you will have no recollection of the procedure. You are safely and comfortably “asleep”.
For this type of anesthesia you are required to arrive with an escort as you are not able to drive yourself to/from the office the day of the procedure. The other pre-operative instructions are important to follow with this type anesthesia and will be reviewed thoroughly with you at your consultation.
