Obstructive Sleep Apnea Needs Treatment
Posted on 9/20/2019 by Dr. Michael Allard
For some, the problem of sleep apnea is a minor inconvenience. They do not get the good sleep they want, or they keep someone else awake because of their sleep apnea. Many people may not look for any type of treatment for their sleep apnea thinking it is not a big deal. There is a problem with this line of thought. Sleep apnea can cause major problems and is a possible sign of a bigger problem. That is why anyone with sleep apnea should look for treatment. Different Types of Sleep ApneaThere are two main types of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA). CSA occurs when the brain does not send the right signals to breathe while you sleep. OSA occurs when the airway is blocked for some reason while you sleep. In either case the lack of breathing affects the amount of oxygen in the blood and can lead to damage to different organs because of the lack of oxygen. Both types of sleep apnea require treatment, but the types of treatment will vary depending on the type of sleep apnea. Treating Obstructive Sleep ApneaOSA is the most common form of sleep apnea. The tongue can fall back in the mouth while sleeping blocking the airway. Once the tongue moves away from the airway, the breathing returns. Periods of no breathing can last as long as 30 seconds. Treatment can come in many ways. Some people can change the sleep position to keep their airway open. Others can turn to oral appliances that prevent the tongue from falling back into the mouth and blocking the airway. There are also machines that create a positive pressure on the airway to keep it open. The good thing about treating OSA is the effect it has on your body. When left untreated, OSA makes it harder for the body to get the rest it needs. People that treat their OSA feel more vitalized and have more energy as a result of getting a restful night's sleep.
