Could You Have a Peg Tooth?
Posted on 3/20/2020 by Dr. Michael Allard
Peg teeth are often called "Dracula teeth" and are the result of a dental disorder known as microdontia. Microdontia is when normal teeth appear smaller than average. Although this dental condition is not as common as others and does not affect dental health at all it does affect your smile and can lead to embarrassment about your teeth. If you suspect you have peg teeth, read on to find out more and what kind of treatment options, you have available. A Case of Mistaken IdentityMicrodontia is a condition that is not well known amongst most people. Most have never heard of "Dracula teeth" and only refer to them as small teeth or a small tooth. Oftentimes, the majority of people will mistakenly refer to them as baby teeth, but this is often not the case. The chances of having a baby tooth after adolescence are very rare. Peg teeth can be smaller than the lateral tooth on the other side of the jaw, have significant gaps around them, and can be fairly sharp. Dental Treatment OptionsFixing peg teeth does not have to be complicated or expensive. Peg teeth can be fixed to look like normal teeth and some of the options are resins, veneers, crowns, and implants. Although it is not medically necessary to fix these teeth, they can lead to being self-conscious when you smile. In which case we recommend going through one of the aforementioned procedures. Dental resin bonding is the pain-free, quick, and economical option. A resin that matches your teeth is applied and shaped to look just like the opposite tooth. Another option is veneering which is applied to your tooth after it has been shaped by a drill. Veneers are the more permanent option and generally last longer. A worst-case scenario is tooth extraction followed by an implant. A great dentist can spot peg teeth early on and perform what must be done to fix them. Although if you suspect that you have small teeth do not hesitate to call our office and schedule a consultation. We can recommend the best treatment options that fit your budget today....
